Peter Dinklage teases that Tyrion is dreading his 'Game of Thrones' family reunion

Game of Thrones' Lannister siblings are hardly the poster children for family values, and Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion, says his character's homecoming will be extra tense.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dinklage gave Game of Thrones fans a peek at Tyrion's state of mind as he returns to King's Landing ... and as he prepares to reunite with his brother and bloodthirsty sister.

“He’s returning home, and returning home a new person,” Dinklage told EW. “He has Dany and the dragons on his side but he is a very different person than when he left this place. And he’s returning to a brother he loves and a sister he…” Hates? Fears? Knew would murder him immediately if she had the chance and knew she could get away with it? All of the above?

“He’s bracing himself," Dinklage finished.

Dinklage also noted that Tyrion is a different person when he returns to King's Landing, from when he initially left.

“He found purpose,” Dinklage said, since Tyrion is now aligned with Daenerys. “He was just going to drink himself to death after the end of season 4, then Varys gave him a purpose in life and then in Daenerys he saw somebody he could get behind."

Season 4 was disastrous for Tyrion — In the season, he was the prime accused suspect in Joffrey's murder. Tyrion tried to clear his name via trial by combat ... but that ended sorely for Tyrion and his champion, Oberyn Martell. To make the matters worse, the testimonies against Tyrion included a damning performance from his former lover Shei, whom Tyrion murdered — along with his father — while escaping King's Landing.

Tl;Dr: Tyrion could really use a win and a dragon queen to restore his hope.

"That’s what somebody like Tyrion needs — he needs a gig to get behind," Dinklage said. "Give him a drink and he doesn’t do so well.”

Find out what Tyrion's up to when Game of Thrones returns July 16.
